卷十五三八、无理的干涉

　　（二月十二日）

　　初十夜哥伦比亚大学世界学生会之俄国学生请大文豪托尔斯泰（Tolstoi）之子伊惹·托尔斯泰伯爵（Count Ilya Tolstoi）演说。不意大学俄文科教长Prof. J. D. Prince（J. D. 普林斯教授）素不喜托氏之理论者，出而干涉，竟令大学书记禁止此会用大学讲室为会场，托氏遂不能演说。托氏谓人曰：

　　I thought for a while that I was back in Russia and not in "free" America. Worse than that—for the precise address I intened to give had been delivered last October in Moscow and the address had been approved by the Chief of Police before it was delivered.

　　〔中译〕

　　我还以为我刚才是回到了俄国，而不是在“自由”的美国。更为糟糕的是，我原打算作的演说正是去年十月我在莫斯科所作的，而该演说当初是事先经过警察长同意了的。

　　此不独本校之辱，亦此邦之羞也。
